alexa + mulberry = awesome.

Not Swedish, but noteworthy. I saw this awhile ago, but since I wasn't blogging at the time, I neglected to mention it to anyone... I would like to have this:

Frisbee Golf

I live next to a giant nature strip, filled with running and bike tracks, lakes and a spot for beach volleyball in the summer. T and I have been going running through it since we moved in a couple of months ago, and I can't wait to see what it looks like when the snow melts. During one of these runs, he pointed out a main feature of the area: its frisbee golf course. What in the heck? I am not sure if we rock the frisbee golf in Canada, but apparently it became pretty popular here in the 90's and people still enjoy a good game now and then these days too. For those of you, like me, who have never heard of this wacky game, it involves a frisbee being thrown along a loosely marked course towards metal baskets which represent each 'hole'. From what I have seen, the holes are buried in really awkward spots in heavily wooded areas, which I imagine make the throwing of a frisbee quite difficult in such conditions. Anyway, I thought I would have to wait until summer to try this game out, but the other day when we were running in the back woods, T was nearly hit in the face by a rogue frisbee. I think I'll be giving it a try next weekend.

These photos were posted by an unknown gentleman somewhere on the internet, they are of the fg course next to my place in the fall.

Hi, I'm in Sweden.

Internet? Hello?

So... My hiatus has lasted much longer than I anticipated. But I am back! I figure since my email correspondence skills are not the greatest that I should be keeping those of you who are curious, or even those who are simply addicted to reading blogs generally, informed about my life here in Göteborg, Sverige.

I am thinking that maybe a Swedish theme blog may be appropriate, perhaps highlighting some of the quirky and interesting things about this beautiful city and country that I may come across. I have a lot more time on my hands since uni is officially over, so I am going to endeavour to bring my camera out and about more frequently and show you some of the sights around here.

Okay, hej då for now. Puss!

gmail chat archive circa late 2007.

a man from chicago, a writer, a musician and the source of much needed distraction during my time as a data entry officer (official title). good dude, hope to cross paths again one day.

2:11 PM me: i feel like we have drifted apart... like there is an ocean between us...
McRae: I know it's like life has stopped but the world keeps spinning.
2:12 PM me: i think we just stopped trying.
2:13 PM McRae: we? You haven't gotten any of my telegrams?
me: my carrier pigeon messages...
McRae: or candygrams?
me: courier? haha
2:14 PM McRae: all those bottles I threw into Lake Michigan with secret messages written for your eyes only?
me: damn it. they must have been intercepted by terrorists.
McRae: they never washed up at your door in Melbourne?
2:15 PM I swear to god, if those terrorists intercept one more of my important missives...
I'm going to go to Pakistan myself and have a stern talking with those people at those secret training camps
2:18 PM me: well somebody has to... this terrorism business has been going on un-addressed long enough I say.
2:19 PM McRae: that's right, I think I'll write a stern letter to my congressman while I'm at it.
me: i mean really, someone needs to teach them a lesson in politeness. those messages could have saved our relationship.
a strongly worded email perhaps?
2:20 PM McRae: it'll include terms like "cockamayme terrorists" and "craptastic al qeada"
or however you spell that crap
me: damn, you - you are good.
2:21 PM so what's shakin' homefry?
2:22 PM McRae: me. I stopped drinking a couple weeks ago.
me: no you didnt
you take that back.
McRae: there was a bender that went on for a month or so
I should rephrase..
2:23 PM I took a minute away from my true love... "Jameson"
this is not a permanent thing
me: if he really was your true love you'd know he spells his name with an 'i' in there somewhere.
2:24 PM McRae: I just decided to de-scar my liver a little
me: thats good, i hear it repairs pretty quickly
so i'm investigating scientology.
2:25 PM McRae: First of Jameson is a beautiful lady and there is no "i" in Jameson just like "team" or "steve"
2:26 PM like as a journalist or because you want to be a narcissistic nut-job who after the indoctrination I will forever refer to as "Captain Insano"
?
2:29 PM me: curiosity mostly.

The Melbourne Edition.

My flatmate R bought me this book last year called Stuff White People Like. It basically just points out how white people (the book was primarily written about North Americans) all tended to have the same hobbies, likes and dislikes (i.e. to study abroad in Australia, love Wes Anderson movies, when a bad political decision is made they threaten to move to Canada (if from the US) or to Europe (if from Canada) etc.).

Well, today TH sent me a great little link... all those interested in learning a bit about what White People in Melbourne Like should check out this dude's :: blog :: . The top 5 categories that I fit into on there are: Northcote (I live there), Moroccan Soup Bar (my house gets take-away from there every Sunday night without fail), Hating on Sydney (sorry, but compared to Melb, Syd is pretty lame), Churros (San Churros on Brunswick St. in Fitzroy is delicious, admit it) and Dropping the 'North' from my suburb name (not so much now, because I don't think people would know where 'cote' was, but admittedly when I lived in Fitzroy (North), it was easier... and slightly cooler I guess, to say "oh I live in Fitzroy, just at the corner of Brunswick Street and Alexandra Parade...").

Anyway, Melburnians should enjoy this, but any of you coming to visit here one day might find this an interesting insight into the culture in this wonderful city... it's all pretty true.

...really thought about and appreciated how amazing it is to be able to make choices, give hugs, tell people you love them, exercise, eat and fall asleep in a warm bed without too many real dangers looming the next day...?

let's try harder tomorrow. xx B

hot.

I am not hugely into girly mags, definitely prefer the frankies and yens of the world for their music, craft and literary content... but was enticed today to purchase 'Cleo' (think Cosmo-type articles on 'how to love you body'and 'how deal with a break up', etc.) because Scarlett's cover photo blew my mind. How hot is this woman? I feel the need to get major collagen every time I look at her.

background: "a girl was out with friends having drinks on King St (in Toronto ). This guy approaches her and won't leave her alone -saying how cute she is. She finally gives in and hands the guy her business card to get rid of him.

The guy left TWO voicemails. After hearing them you can clearly see why she didn't call him back - instead she called in to the Z103.5 morning show & had them play this on the air."

sorry for the linkage.

it has been pointed out to me by one of my (only) followers that i have been overloading this little online diary with links. this person did confess to clicking most of them, so at least they are somewhat interesting links, but i thought i should say a big 'i'm sorry!' to all of ya'll who stop by occasionally. it really is a matter of me being lazy, or i've been sent funny things i want to share or i just have a need to pass on things that i feel like i found out about too late or something.

anyway, i could just start writing about my day to day...

today:

7 am - alarm goes off. snooze button.

7:07 am - alarm goes off. snooze button.

7:14 am - alarm goes off. snooze button.

7:21 am - alarm goes off. i accept the fact that i am not going to 'get up early and go for a run' today. reset alarm for 8:30 am.

8:30 am - alarm goes off. receive a text from M saying he'd pick me up for uni at 9:30 am. i know this means he will be here at 9:45 am. snooze button.

8:37 am - alarm goes off. i sneak one toe out of bed. it's cold in my room. i contemplate staying under the covers a little longer, and end up convincing myself that it is okay if i stay in bed as long as i am 'planning' what i will do once i get out of bed ("first, go shower. then make a toast. and a coffee. mmm, coffee. with chocolate powder in it. mmmm mocha. etc."). realise that once i get up, i get a mocha. so i get out of bed. turn off my alarm.

8:40 am to 9:37 am - go on the internet, check email, print out notes for class. realise if i don't make a toast soon, i won't have a break to eat until 2 pm. make a toast and coffee with chocolate powder. M honks the horn out front, i run out of the house, forgetting to pack a very vital piece of equipment - my laptop charger. this completely defeats the purpose of me bringing my laptop to school since it has a battery life of about 17 minutes on a good day (when i turn down the screen brightness to conserve energy).

10 am to 2 pm - class.

2 pm to 2:30 pm - participate as a test subject for a psychology major who was researching the brain's capacity to process 'complex sentences' for his thesis. i am lead into a small room, sat down at a computer and told to read these really confusing sentences like "the gymnast who pictured the trainer running into a wall while drinking a banana-smoothie was very nervous about her competition next monday" or "the defense lawyer who accidentally spilled water on the judge's lap turned to yell at the prosecution for failing to acquire the required documentation before the trial". then, intermittently, a question pops up "did the judge yell at the prosecution?" and i have to press 'y' or 'n'. it isn't too bad in the beginning, but my poor brain gets very tired after 15 minutes of sentences.

2:30 pm to 4 pm - rent out an audio/video room with some friends under the guise of needing to watch VHS tapes about carbon emissions so that we could do prep work for our last tutorial of the day.

4 pm to 6 pm - class

6 pm to 6:30 pm - M drives me home.

6:30pm to 7:30pm - dinner (left-over cannelloni that has lasted me for three dinners now) and some 'lounging'. the tv tells me that the most viewed youtube clip at the moment is called 'battle at kruger' and that there is a new documentary out about it. i would put the link up here for you, but that would be contrary to the purpose of this post. sorry!

7:30 pm to 10:45 pm (now) - send an email to my mom thanking her for the nice care-package she sent me, read an article called the Methods of Social Control Through Law for a mid-semester assessment due next week and take some notes.

now, i wait to have a quick goodnight chat with T and get to sleep before midnight (fingers crossed).

sooooo.... is this better than embedding youtube clips? or should i do a better job of searching the interweb for 'new' and 'cool' stuffs!!! (i'm bad at that)

puss och kram, bean.

MY dinner!

now before some of you point your finger at the screen and cry 'hypocrite!' (since i tend to poke fun at :: Age 32 :: for his daily dinner photojournalism... all in good fun!), i am showing you this evening's grocery list because it is accompanied by a cute story of human kindness and my hierarchy of needs.

i had $8.20 in my wallet, so my shopping was done strategically. the 750ml of Cooper's Pale was a steal at $5.99! anyway, got to the counter and the girl rang up my total. turns out my three items came to $8.66 (in Australia there are no pennies, so it was actually $8.70!). payday is tomorrow, so i had to make an executive decision: " uhhh, looks like the onion has got to go." i told the cashier. she looked at me with pity and asked how much i had. when i told her i was 50 cents short, a guy behind me offered to spot me the change. he was wearing a racing bike helmet and a sweatshirt bearing this:

in the end, the kindly cashier let me off the hook. i thanked her profusely while packing up my groceries and as i walked out, bike helmet/nirvana shirt guy said "i really like that the beer took precedence over the food." i turned and said "always, mate. always."

* for those of you who are curious - the onion was for a tuna salad that i used on a tuna melt... delicious!

kitty daisy & lewis

these kids (15, 18 and 20 years old or something) are siblings and are some weird phenoms. like the cool new hanson. check out the rockabilly sound, i kind of dig the johnny cash influence. they will also be at Meredith this year... oh my!

warning! this may be inappropriate...

i have been meaning to put this up since my trip. i met Lou, one of T's close friends from Melb, but who was originally from and now lives back in sweden. she was super lovely and good fun. one night, in stockholm, we had a youtube clip viewing party on a projector at J and L's place. Lou directed us to this series of clips... turns out it was her and a friend and i pretty much think this is one of the most under-appreciated pieces of genius on the internet. and yes! it is a 5 part series!!!

also, sorry about the poor timing (news that MJ's death was likely homicide...), but i only remembered to do this because of the newspaper headlines yesterday :(

this song used to bum me out, but now i kind of like it. cute little animation too, produced by :: musicANDmuffins:: , who have also done stick-people animations for other goodies like breathe me by sia. hoo-ray!

i know your best is still your worst.

K wants to play this, open-mic styles, and H and I have decided to learn the harmonies. Have been a lover of the BoH for awhile now, and when I get on a kick of listening to them, it is so hard to stop. Also, sad story - they just played in my soon to be hometown (Göteborg, Sweden) at the Way out West festival along with my one true musical crush, Bon Iver (as opposed to my cinematic crushes, there are two of those: Jason Schwartzman and Jason Segel. Woah, never noticed they are both Jasons before!).

digging through papers and books.

I saw you, just standing there
Your eyes were kind of closed
You were playing with your hair.

You asked me what to do
But got angry with me when
I said I didn't care.

'Go away' and all of that.
Oh how unfair! you cry
But why should I be fair?

We tripped the wire
And ran from the alarm
Down those stairs, my legs were shaking.

If only I hadn't stopped breathing
After I saw you
Then maybe my chest wouldn't be heaving.

Breathing tends to cause problems
Anyway that's not the point
I'm making.

Let's just be friends
With other people
This isn't working, sorry.

What do we want to be?
Yeah we are grown ups now
That day has come and gone.

What do we do now?
Sick of all of the highs
Only makes me low.

What can we say now?
Sick of all of the lies
That no one else will know.

public enemies. one hundred thumbs down.

I like J Depp as much as the next girl (What's Eating Gilbert Grape...Edward Scissor Hands.. too many goodies to list!), but dear lord. Public Enemies was so slow, so awkward, so utterly unimpressive that TS and I walked out. 45 minutes in, after his fourth declaration of love to the French girl he rescues from a coat-check job, Depp just started getting on my nerves. TS turned to me and I said "I don't care about this movie at all.", TS said, "Bored."

We left the theatre, and I imagine that a few of the other audience members were considering following us out. The only things I enjoyed about this movie night were the previews (Funny People and 500 Days of Summer are finally coming to Aussie theatres in September!)and of course the company (as always, TS!).

To make matters worse, M tells me on Monday that District 9 was wicked. This was the option TS had suggested before I insisted on seeing PE. This proves two things: I really am the worst movie-chooser ever (something that should have been clear to me after the time I forced a room full of boys to watch Marie Antoinette)and also, maybe I should ease up on my Sci-Fi boycott.

** notice how Johnny is even covering his face in shame in the poster???

Louis.

TS found Louis' newest adventure - partying with Meth Addicts in Fresno. Well not so much partying, he observes... and asks really great questions. He is a champion.

paparazzi.

lunch with M and i am walking down Williams St. back to work. i pass this girl, and do a double-take. she is holding the hand of a cute little girl dressed in a pink ballerina dress and red flats. my heart starts racing, and i begin to hyperventilate a little. to be fair, joey potter was my IDOL for my entire high school career, so spotting her on the street was like meeting... i am trying to come up with a respectable celebrity idol, can't think of one. but anyway, i friggin' loved katie holmes.

hands shaking, i dropped my camera, couldn't find my phone, and after arguing in my head with myself over whether or not to follow her back up the street (i was put off by the fact that the one and only bodyguard-type man with her and suri had spotted me and i have a fear of scientologists) i managed to take some blurry photos... i have to qualify them with the following: i am very disappointed in my lack of stalker-instincts because i totally should have gotten on the tram with her and taken a decent photo.

ah!

back 'home', a funny word for me to use because i am not quite sure where to call home these days. but nonetheless, i am on elm street, back to work, back to school after a marathon of trip back from the sweden.

i am having reverse anxiety associated with the posting of more photos - one of which is of the dessert buffet at the ridiculously nice hotel at KL International Airport. the airline hooked me up with lunch and dinner vouchers and a sweet room (king-sized squishy bed, bathtub, i felt like julia roberts) so i could kill the 11 hour stop-over i had before the final leg of the trip to melbourne. they did this despite the fact that i had caused some issues by missing my originally scheduled flight out of stockholm four days earlier, much to my embarrassment, but ultimately i was quite grateful for a few more stolen days with T.

i also had some intention of writing a quick film review on the 10 movies i watched during my flights, some real must-sees in the mix including I Love You, Man (Jason Segel. the best.), Sunshine Cleaners and a German film called Everyone Else. may or may not follow through with that plan.

overall i feel pretty okay, jet-lagged like i never imagined possible, but it is always a good feeling to be at the start of a new semester. it's like all your past laziness and slacking off at school is erased and forgiven, all your poor study habits and lack of motivation for academic excellence feel surmountable. M and i actually downloaded all of the extra readings for our classes, a feat never accomplished so early into a term... almost makes me believe that i won't be a champion procrastinator this time around.

photos to come, but more sleep is required to ensure some degree of alertness on my first day back to the office tomorrow, i start at 7.30 am. hoo-ray for being employed though, yes? :)

peace, love and happy thoughts kids.

books on shelves.

R and I hit Konstmuseet Göteborg earlier this week and both loved the same piece of art. It was an Ikea Expedit bookshelf. We knew this because a) we are in Sweden, so everything is Ikea and b) R actually works as a visual merchandiser at the Ikea in Melbourne, which pretty much makes her an expert. So, the Expedit had books artistically arranged and glued onto the shelves, with the spines of the books facing the wall. Sounds kind of lame as I describe it, but what made it so lovable for me was that the artist had gone and sawed the shelf and the books in half so that they were half as deep, only sticking out about 4 inches from the wall. I imagine this doesn't make sense, I tried to explain it to T for 20 minutes in the car on the way home that day, but trust me, it looked very neat and I am going to re-create it in a smaller version for our apartment (which we have yet to find). I tried to search for an image of it since I only have one on my phone and am not tech-savvy enough to email it to myself or something like that, but no dice. I did, however, end up coming across these pretty sweet bookshelves as consolation prizes.

clever! books glued together to make the shelf, by not tom.

*poof*

I finally scored film for Diana (thanks R!) so I will be taking some proper photos to document my final 4 days in Sweden. And then *poof*, back to Oz. One semester of law school left. I have to find another cafe job so that I can work full-time while I study full-time. I just keep reminding myself that Melbourne is going to be getting warmer and warmer... and it is a tough place to beat in the summertime. But still... heading back to Melbourne means the start of another countdown. I am going to miss this.

of all the things that i could post...

i'm away. i have photos and updates and i am having a wonderful time. it is weird though, because i have some irrational aversion to posting/facebooking/emailing while i am on a trip. even when i went home over christmas, i had this strange anxiety in the first few weeks surrounding checking my news feed on fb... can't explain it. but here is a little somethin' somethin' to break the 'posting seal'. this guy rules. oil an' vinega'.
