As suggested by :: L :: (and as something I was actually contemplating doing anyway!), I am going to start introducing a little bit of Swedish vocab so that when I get home this summer with T you can all have a few Sweded phrases and words to use with him. (He speaks English, but it would be funny to surprise him!)

I will start with a mixed bag today, in no particular order and for no particular reason:

1. Fart = means speed. Actually, "farthinder" means speed bump, which I found pretty funny.


2. Grönsaker = literal translation is "green things", but this is the Swedish word for vegetables. You pronounce the "ö" like an "eu" in French (if that helps...).



3. Uttryck = this is two Swedish words stuck together (they LOVE to do this), "ut" meaning out or exit and "tryck" which means press. Together, can you guess what they mean? Express! As in express yourself. I was super stoked when I guessed that one. I googled "uttryck" to get a photo and this one came up... express your butt! By :: Daniel Levielle :: .


4. Hej då! = means goodbye! Pronounce the "å" like "eau" in French (I am assuming as Canadians you guys will have some Frenchie in you). Below are a bunch of Aussies waving Hej då... *tear*

To me jj sounds a bit like the xx meets olive, meets lykke li, meets imogen... meets the Neverending Story? Anyway, the Swedish "electro-pop" duo originally released some tunes in 2009 under the Göteborg-based independent label :: Sincerely Yours :: and are now also signed to an American label called :: Secretly Canadian :: (fantastic name!). I am waiting for them to come home to Sverige, hopefully I can catch them in a small venue... Pustervik perhaps? Thanks Davey for the tip, I know you and Rolls have been talking these guys up since last year... I'm catching on!

Canada/Chile :: Francisco Garcia - photography ::

My first memory of :: Francisco Garcia :: , or "Franky" as I was told, is at a backyard party at Jonny 5's place when I was in grade 10. I vaguely remember him being payed to fight someone there. Or there was some sort of arranged sparring match thing that he may or may not have taken part in. Anyhow, I am sure it was all in good fun. Oh, and I later heard he dated a childhood best friend of mine. All that to say that I have come across his name now and then over the years, most recently when I was reading a post about the art collective :: Snakepunch! :: , of which he is a member along with GB, Age 32 and fontski. This led me to :: his blog :: and wow, has he been busy! I especially love the :: tna shoot :: (see some shots below), so soft and playful, and just really pretty. I am so impressed with these hometown photogs, very impressed indeed. Oh, and I must track down that amazing blanket/poncho.

Sweded :: Olle Hemmendorff - advertising, internet, fashion and art::

This :: guy :: makes delicious :: shoes :: . These bad boys were commissioned by Nike and displayed in Stockholm at :: Sneakersnstuff :: a while back. Mmmm.

Also, upon further inspection of his site, Olle managed to do some pretty cool interior decorating by laying down some sticky-back vinyl over his less than attractive flooring and doodling all over the place. The result is wicked, and as a side note: his cat is ridiculously beautiful.

Band of Amazing.

Due to the Icelandic volcanic fog, S could not return from Spain to Göteborg in time for the Band of Horses concert last night. Bad news for her, but amazing news for me! No flash allowed so my 10 year digi could not handle taking photos... but I tried anyway.

My friend K's dog, Cesar. He is a 10 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback and is responsible for K and my friendship (he introduced us on the tram one night). And yes, he is named after Cesar Millan, the dog whisperer guy. So handsome!

Cheap Art.

T and I went to countless second hand shops and church sales when we first moved in in January, hunting for cool, cheap furniture for our place. One of the spots was a gold mine and we found tons of great pieces for like 3$ each. On our way out, I spotted a mirror with an an Art Nouveau style lady printed on it. How much? 2$? Sold. Today I was checking out some fb photos and recognised the image from the mirror in one of my friend's fb profile photos from when she was in Paris. Turns out the image is from one of Czech painter Alphonse Mucha's JOB cigarette paper posters from 1896. Cool beans!

I used to have this wish as a kid, to have a secret door in the wall of my room that would lead to a little nook. Inside I envisioned a comfy armchair, a standing lamp and a book shelf full of Babysitter's Club, Sweet Valley High, Christopher Pike and R.L. Stine books. Nerd!

Portland :: Mark Warren Jacques - painter and amateur philosopher ::

Mark Warren Jacques. His work is currently being shown in a group exhibition (called 'New Territory') at :: White Walls gallery :: in San Francisco. According to his bio, " Mark describes himself as an “amateur philosopher” concerned with relationships, music, skateboarding, entrepreneurship, and living life to the fullest every day. His controlled, tight lines and loose, fluid ones are a cosmic representation of his thoughts and feelings." I am liking the dream catcher'y shapes and native patterns, I just want to put these pieces all over my apartment!

Swedes are cute and like TV a lot. Oh and most are musically gifted. That may be an overstatement, but in my experience it is true! Loving that he snuck Freaks and Geeks in there, disappointed that he forgot Dawson's Creek.

More on the topic of grammar.

People amaze me. As my prior post on grammar states, I am no spelling queen. But as put by the writers on the Good Blog (check out blog roll for the link), "It's not that you have to have perfect spelling to make a cogent political point. And sure, there are misspelled signs at any rally. But given the arrogance and xenophobia on display, you'd think these people would double-check things".

They all feature "creative" spelling or grammar. This new dialect of the English language shall be known as "Teabonics.""

Tea Party rallies are part of a larger movement known as the Tea Party Movement. If you go by the messages on their protest signs, the group is anti-Obama, anti-Socialism in any form, anti-immigration, anti-Mexico in general, anti-taxes, anti-any language other than English and anti-grammar. They are however pro-racism and pro-Fox news.

Here are some particularly powerful signs that may sum up the general sentiment of the movement as well as the level of education of its proponents.
